1.Office Suite: Open Office- Highly compatible with Microsoft Office. Contains a Word Processor, Database, Spreadsheet, Drawing Program and Presentation program. Excellent program for business & education. Probably more than what you need for home use.
2. Word Processors: AbiWord- Compatible with Microsoft Word. Low resource usage & easy to use. A very good alternative to Word.
Tomahawk PDF- Another good word processor, although it does not support Word documents, it does import Rich Text format. A very nice feature is that it exports directly to PDF format if you should need this format.
3. PDF Utilities: I know Adobe Acrobat Reader probably came with your computer, but here are two free alternatives that have more features and open PDF files much more quickly than Adobe Reader. Foxit Reader-loads files very quickly. Compatible with Mozilla and Microsoft Browsers for Internet PDF files
PDFXvwr-even better, in my opinion, than Foxit Reader. This even allows you to add comments, type, highlight, etc. information on the PDF. Although not a full editor, it allows you to really ‘mark-up’ the document. Really fast.
Bullzip- Allows you to convert any document that you can print into a highly accurate PDF document. Installs as a ‘printer’ but actually ‘prints’ the document to a PDF file on your hard drive.
4. Graphics/Multimedia Photofiltre- Excellent image enhancement program. A large variety of plug-ins to add more features. Probably has at least 80% of PhotoShop features, but does not have layers. The free version is for personal or non-profit use only. It even allows you to paste pictures & patterns inside of text for some really nice effects. Can be installed on a portable thumb drive.
